Meta and Broadcom team up on next-generation AI silicon

Meta has announced an expanded partnership with Broadcom to co-develop multiple generations of MTIA chips, its in-house accelerators for large-scale training and inference. Meta says the agreement will support both recommendation systems and generative AI workloads, and that the first phase alone represents more than 1 gigawatt of capacity.

What is new

According to Meta, Broadcom will contribute across chip design, advanced packaging, and networking for the next generation of MTIA. The goal is a more vertically integrated AI stack, giving Meta tighter control over performance, cost, and deployment across its services. The company frames this as the start of a multi-year, multi-gigawatt roadmap for custom AI infrastructure.

Why this matters

This is another sign that the AI race is no longer just about models. It is increasingly about who controls silicon, networking, and power efficiency inside their own data centers. If Meta succeeds in shifting more AI traffic onto its own accelerators, it could reduce dependence on standard GPU capacity and lower inference cost at scale.

For CIOs and infrastructure leaders, the signal is clear: hyperscalers are building more proprietary AI infrastructure, and the gap between model strategy and hardware strategy keeps shrinking.

Source and date validation

The original source is Meta’s own announcement, "Meta Partners With Broadcom to Co-Develop Custom AI Silicon." The page metadata shows a published timestamp of 2026-04-14T21:05:14+00:00, which is within the 48-hour limit. This qualifies the item as a valid fresh news story.
