Microsoft Removes Copilot Branding from Windows 11 Notepad
Microsoft has begun removing "Copilot" branding from the Notepad app in Windows 11, as part of a larger initiative to reduce unnecessary AI integrations across the operating system.
From Copilot to "Writing Tools"
Today Microsoft confirmed they have started rolling out to Windows Insiders where the prominent Copilot logo in Notepad is being replaced with a more subtle "Writing tools" icon in the toolbar.
The "AI Features" section within Notepad's settings has also been rebranded as "Advanced Features," where users can still enable or disable AI-powered writing tools such as "Write, Rewrite, Summarize."
Part of Broader Strategy
The change is part of Microsoft's broader push to be more "intentional" with Copilot integrations across Windows 11, including Snipping Tool, Photos app, and Widgets.
Microsoft acknowledges wanting to focus on genuinely useful and well-crafted experiences, following feedback and criticism around excessive AI branding.
Functionality Remains
While the Copilot branding and icon have been removed, the underlying AI functionalities remain intact in Notepad. Users can still utilize the writing tools through the new, more discrete interface.
This adjustment reflects a balance between AI innovation and user experience, where Microsoft seeks to integrate artificial intelligence in a less intrusive manner.
