Microsoft bets $5.5 billion on AI in Singapore
Microsoft has announced a $5.5 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in Singapore, spanning 2025 through 2029. This represents the company's largest single commitment worldwide.
Brad Smith, Microsoft's Vice Chair and President, made the announcement during his keynote at the ATxInspire event in Singapore on April 1, 2026.
The investment covers data center and cloud infrastructure expansion, but also includes several education programs. Every tertiary student in Singapore will receive free access to Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot for 12 months. Educators get free AI training through Microsoft Elevate for Educators, and nonprofit leaders gain access through Microsoft Elevate for Changemakers.
Singapore has positioned itself as a hub for AI in Asia, and Microsoft's investment follows similar commitments from Google and AWS in the region. The move underscores that the battle for AI dominance is increasingly about infrastructure and skills development, not just model development.
