OpenAI Merging ChatGPT, Codex and Atlas Into One Desktop Superapp
OpenAI is consolidating its three main products, ChatGPT, Codex, and the Atlas browser, into a single desktop application.
The plan was outlined by Fidji Simo, OpenAI's head of applications, at an internal all-hands meeting on March 16. The news was publicly confirmed on March 28, 2026.
The rationale is straightforward: Anthropic is gaining ground in the enterprise market with tightly integrated offerings like Claude Code and Claude Cowork. OpenAI responded by launching separate products (the Atlas browser in October 2025, the Codex app in February 2026), but the fragmentation creates friction for users.
The superapp will bring everything together with a strong emphasis on agentic AI capabilities, enabling AI to autonomously handle complex tasks across coding, research, and daily workflows on the user's machine.
The mobile ChatGPT app will remain separate.
The timing is deliberate. OpenAI is preparing for an IPO and needs to demonstrate a unified product strategy. The company recently secured $110 billion in new funding at a $730 billion valuation.
For enterprise users, this could mean simpler onboarding and more seamless workflows. For developers already using Codex and Atlas separately, the key question is whether the transition will be smooth or disruptive.
