Oracle Lays Off 30000 Employees to Fund AI Infrastructure

Oracle is cutting between 20,000 and 30,000 employees globally, approximately 18 percent of its 162,000-person workforce. The reason is not that the company is struggling. Quite the opposite: Oracle is redirecting 8 to 10 billion dollars in freed-up capital directly into AI infrastructure.

Termination notices arrived from Oracle Leadership on March 31st, without warning. Affected divisions include Oracle Health, NetSuite, Cloud, Sales, and Customer Success. Senior engineers, architects, operations leaders, and project managers are among those impacted.

Oracle has committed to approximately 50 billion dollars in capital expenditure for AI infrastructure in fiscal year 2026. The company's remaining performance obligations now stand at 553 billion dollars, driven almost entirely by AI contracts.

The rationale is twofold: the market demands massive data centers that cost more than the balance sheet can comfortably sustain with the existing payroll, and AI coding tools are enabling smaller engineering teams to deliver what previously required far larger workforces.

Oracle is not alone. What we are seeing is a pattern that will repeat across the tech industry: large companies systematically replacing human labor with AI capacity, and calling it investing in the future.
