World Launches AgentKit: Human Verification for AI Shopping Agents
Sam Altman's other company, World (formerly Worldcoin), has launched AgentKit — a tool that lets online stores verify there's a real human behind an AI agent's purchases. The timing is telling: while OpenAI is pushing AI agents into every buying process, Altman is simultaneously building the system to prevent their abuse.
The Problem AgentKit Solves
AI shopping agents are growing exponentially. They browse websites, compare prices, add items to cart, and complete purchases on behalf of users. The problem? No one can distinguish between a legitimate user agent and a fraud bot.
The result is potential for mass fraud, spam purchases, and large-scale internet abuse — a problem payment companies like Mastercard are already warning about.
The Solution: World ID + the x402 Protocol
AgentKit is built on two foundations:
World ID — an encrypted digital identity derived from an iris scan via World's Orb device. The iris is converted into a unique, encrypted code that confirms the person is human and unique.
The x402 protocol — a blockchain-based open standard for automated payments, developed by Coinbase and Cloudflare. AgentKit allows World ID to be integrated into this system, enabling commerce websites to verify human intent behind an agent's transactions.
Irony and Strategy
The irony isn't lost: Altman's OpenAI is responsible for much of the AI slop flooding the internet. Simultaneously, he's building the tools to protect against its consequences. Whether that's foresighted or calculated — probably both.
Status
AgentKit is in beta starting today, available to commercial websites via World app's developer platform. The tool is free to integrate; Orb verification requires physical access to a World Orb station.
