Clarivate AI50: NVIDIA and Alphabet Top the World's First AI Patent Ranking

Analytics firm Clarivate launched on March 26 what is the first major data-driven global ranking of AI patent holders. AI50 identifies the 50 organizations with the most high-quality AI inventions, based on Clarivate's proprietary Derwent Strength Index.

NVIDIA, Micron Technology, Alphabet, Qualcomm, and Foxconn are among the top-ranked entries. The ranking differs from other AI lists by focusing exclusively on patents with multinational protection — inventions patented in at least two countries. This filters out junk patenting and emphasizes actual innovation strength.

Geographically, the picture is striking. About 80 percent of ranked organizations are headquartered in four regions: Mainland China (15), the United States (14), South Korea (6), and Japan (6). European companies are nearly absent from the list.

More than half of the AI50 organizations also appear on Clarivate's 2026 Top 100 Global Innovators list, suggesting AI innovation is concentrated among an already broadly innovative group.

For decision-makers, AI50 is a useful compass. It provides an objective picture of who is actually investing heavily in AI development beyond marketing and press releases. Companies evaluating strategic partnerships or vendor selection can use the ranking to assess long-term innovation capacity.
