Oracle and OpenAI are expanding their partnership and bringing Oracle's business systems into ChatGPT. With a new service, Oracle AI Workspace, employees are meant to pull data and complete approved workflows in Oracle Fusion, NetSuite and Oracle's database and cloud directly from ChatGPT. Oracle is also launching three new offerings built on OpenAI's models and its coding tool Codex.

Oracle announced the news at its Oracle AI World conference in Las Vegas in a press release at 17:08 Oslo time (12:08 ET) on Tuesday, 27 October. OpenAI published its own post about the deal the same day.

The business system moves into ChatGPT

The centrepiece is Oracle AI Workspace. Oracle describes it as a single user experience that connects OpenAI's models with Oracle applications, enterprise data and cloud services. Through plugins in ChatGPT, employees are meant to find information, complete approved workflows and take action in Oracle systems, within their organisation's own permissions and approvals.

Oracle says Workspace is designed to connect Oracle Fusion Applications, Oracle NetSuite, Oracle AI Database, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and other enterprise tools and data sources. OpenAI writes that Oracle "is developing" the service, so it is not described as generally available.

OpenAI gives an example: a new member of a finance team could use ChatGPT to investigate costs, understand purchasing decisions and see what remains before month-end close, with finance, procurement and planning data brought together in one place.

Security testing, apps and a small-business bundle

Alongside Workspace, Oracle is launching three offerings built with OpenAI:

  • Oracle AI Security Mesh is a managed service that uses OpenAI's cyber models to find and fix vulnerabilities in applications and infrastructure across OCI, other clouds and on-premises environments. Customers define what may be tested, while Oracle manages the safeguards meant to prevent outages during testing.
  • Oracle App Composer lets employees build enterprise apps with Codex without coding skills. Oracle runs the apps on OCI with identity, permissions, networking, audit and life-cycle controls.
  • Oracle AI SMB Bundle is a free-to-start package for small businesses with $12,000 in Oracle cloud credits per year. It combines ChatGPT Business, Codex, App Composer, Workspace and NetSuite QuickStart for invoicing and cash flow. Oracle notes that terms, conditions and restrictions apply.

In the US, Oracle customers can also buy the OpenAI API, Codex and ChatGPT Work through Oracle Marketplace using existing procurement processes and eligible Oracle credits.

Oracle uses it itself

OpenAI says Oracle has 130,000 active ChatGPT users and more than 95,000 active Codex users internally. According to OpenAI, Oracle's recruiting team uses ChatGPT for market research that used to take two to four days and now takes 15 to 20 minutes.

"With this new product suite, we are uniting their transformative AI capabilities with Oracle applications, data, and cloud infrastructure," Oracle CEO Clay Magouyrk said in the press release. OpenAI president Greg Brockman said more businesses are choosing OpenAI as it becomes easier to use AI through the tools they already have.

What it means for leaders

For companies running NetSuite or Oracle Fusion, ChatGPT could become a new front door to finance, procurement and HR data, opening those systems to more employees than the specialists who know them well today. It also means data and actions in core systems get connected to an external AI service. Who may do what through ChatGPT, and how it is logged, should be settled before anything is switched on.

The announcement does not state pricing for Workspace, Security Mesh or App Composer, when the services will be available, or whether they will be offered in Norway and the EU. Purchasing through Oracle Marketplace currently applies only to US customers. The deal also ties Oracle and OpenAI more closely together, which is worth weighing when assessing vendor dependence.
